Understanding Chronic Pain and Healing The Emotional, Mental, and Spirit Self

Pain that persists and becomes worse over time can create feelings of despair. You don’t have to feel that way. Here are resources that will help you become, in the words of a well- respected psychologist Maggie Phillips, PH.D., “your own best healer.” On the other hand, you may just need to feel and be a more revitalized self. I have included programs that will boost your self confidence. Self- esteem, after all, is an important element when speaking about the body and mind link to a healthier you. So, lets start our journey to understanding chronic pain and healing the emotional, mental, and spirit self.

Before we begin, let me just say a word about the five general areas that I hope to cover  in this resource page.

  1. Medical side. When one first experiences chronic pain it’s natural to seek a medical solution, to believe the problem can be solved by medications or surgery.
  2. Retraining The Brian.  Pain is produced by the brain. It’s possible that even when the body is out of danger, that is tissue is healed as best as possible, on going pain still persists. The brain must be retrained to deal with the sensitivity of the nervous system.
  3. Understanding How Emotions effect the nervous system and how to reduce stress.
  4. Diet, life style, and building self- esteem. What we eat, how we live, and how we feel about ourself effects how well we manage our health.
  5. Moving more. It’s important to understand that in most cases treating your pain means becoming more active

RESOURCE    1— The Meaning of Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists for six months or longer. A good place to get quick and effective explanation is to check out the following link www.painsproject.org . Once there, you can look at two very helpful videos. The first one summarizes the points that I have made and is called  “understanding pain: what to do”. The second one is a well presented talk by Elliot Krane called “The Mystery of Chronic Pain.”

RESOURCE 2— Managing Chronic Pain
