Most people take freedom of movement for granted. The question of how to prevent falls by using a security pole and grab bar is something they never have to think  about. They rise in the morning, move around their home, leave for school, work, just carry on with their plans. When you are disabled or have an injury, the act of getting from one place to another can become troublesome.

One of the biggest concerns , for an elderly pain sufferer, when it comes to mobility around the house is falling.

Falls often lead to a fear of falling, which can decrease mobility and independence particularly if an older person loses confidence in the ability to perform activities. Up to 50% of those who have fallen admit to avoiding activities because of fear of further falls or injury.[1]

Consider the following account:

Fear of Falling

Mrs. W had experienced three falls over the past month, all under similar circumstances. Each time, she awakened in the middle of the night with an urge to urinate. After getting out of bed, she hurried to the bathroom without her walker (to guard against incontinence). One time, she slipped on a small area rug by her bed and fell.

Both her bedroom and narrow hallway are poorly illuminated. She felt a little dizzy after getting out of bed and used furnishings and walls to support her balance when walking. In the bathroom, she was able to sit down and get up from the toilet, although she needed to hold onto the sink for balance. Another time, her hand slipped off the sink, which caused her to lose her balance and fall. After she fell, she was unable to get up from the bathroom floor. [2]

Relief For The Entire Family

Falls are distressing for family members, as in the case of Mrs. W. At issue is whether the patient can live at home alone and remain safe. This  is where a security pole and grab bar can be a big help. Security poles enable elderly and disabled individuals to rise up or sit down with strong and stable assistance.

They are excellent fall prevention tools. And can be installed strategically in the home to add security and stability to your or a loved one’s environment.

I really didn’t find any, other than you need a flat ceiling for it to work. However, that’s not a big issue for most people.

It’s a very good product! A friend of mine bought the first after the operation of his mother’s hip. She had trouble getting up from the couch. He bought a 2nd for his bedside. She felt safer by having something stable to hang on the transfer. Do you need help to get in and out of the lift chair? I could not recommend this product enough !! It is very durable and has a beautiful glossy finish that is easy to clean. It will make things easier  and safer for your  family!

  1. This is a very timely post because more and more elderly people are having mobility issues. I got a security post for my grand father and it allowed him to have more confidence and less fearful of falling.

    1. Hi Rose,
I think mobility independence is a huge issue for the recently injured and for elderly people who are living longer but have problems with balance. I think the Stander Safety Bar and Curve Hold Bar is great not only for providing easy transfer from sitting position to standing, but also for providing confidence and taking away the fear of falling.

  2. This is a great read as I have an elderly mother who has balance problems, and something like the security pole seems a perfect solution. Since we are talking about mobility problems as it relates to supporting one’s weight, I was curious about something. Is the security pole meant to accommodate and support the entire weight of a person or is it just meant to help achieve steadiness?

    1. Hi Jennifer,
The security pole was not intended to carry the full weight of an individual. This product is only intended to provide balance and support while sitting and standing. You’re doing the right thing by asking questions. Even though a health equipment such as a security pole benefits many people and helps them achieve independence, it still has to be used correctly to prevent serious injury.
