Introduction

The topic today is how to effectively use your wheelchair  in the rain.

A kind stranger comes to the aid of a man in a wheelchair caught in the rain
A kind stranger helps a man in a wheelchair make it home in the rain

First, let me offer a useful perspective.

Readers of my website know that my mission is to provide solutions that will allow people to overcome the challenges of daily pain. As stated in a previous post, I have covered 5 main areas when it comes to chronic pain:

A woman touches the area of her back where she feels pain
This woman is showing the location of her pain

1Medical side. When one first experiences chronic pain it’s natural to seek a medical solution, to believe the problem can be solved by medications or surgery.

2Retraining The Brian.  Pain is produced by the brain. It’s possible that even when the body is out of danger, that is tissue is healed as best as possible, on going pain still persists. The brain must be retrained to deal with the sensitivity of the nervous system.

3Understanding How Emotions effect the nervous system and how to reduce stress.

4Diet, life style, and building self- esteem. What we eat, how we live, and how we feel about ourself effects how well we manage our health.

5Moving more. It’s important to understand that in most cases treating your pain means becoming more active

In some cases this means talking about products  that I will not get a commission from because I am not an affiliate. I do so because I believe that these products will bring needed solutions to my readers.

This shows a fit blonde stretching on the floor and using foam roller
This shows proper way of using foam roller

In a previous post, I have offered the following observation and suggestions:

Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists for six months or longer. A good place to get quick and effective explanation is to check out the following link www.painsproject.org . Once there, you can look at two very helpful videos. The first one summarizes the points that I have made and is called  “understanding pain: what to do”. The second one is a well presented talk by Elliot Krane called “The Mystery of Chronic Pain.”

http://www.reversingchronicpain.com/books.html

The author,Maggie Phillips, explains that Each chapter presents a body-centered skill set to reverse chronic and persistent pain.

I am here to talk about another unaffiliated  product that I think offers a solution to back pain sufferers trying to go on with their  lives.

This time the issue is one that we don’t normally think about, but effects a lot of people. What do you do when You are stuck in a wheelchair and it starts raining?  You need to know how to effectively use your wheelchair in the rain.

Let’s jump in

Recently, Share Tap, an updated site of the best news and stories on the net, reported a  heart warming story by Holly Reyes. A good Samaritan was filmed  by a YouTuber in Canada,Penelope Derksen, pushing a disabled man in a wheel chair up a hill in a thunder storm.

“She first noticed the weather, which was somewhat alarming. The heavy rain made for difficult travels even for those in a vehicle, but this man she saw was out trying to get home in a wheelchair. The electric wheelchair, like any other, can only go to a certain speed which was certainly not fast enough to take him to safety, yet there was a kind stranger who took notice.”

Here is the amazing Video

What The News Means For Back Pain Sufferers Using Wheel Chairs

This news is inspiring for most of us who are constantly confronted with stories about how we mistreat each other. Unfortunately the news is also troubling for back pain sufferers who rely completely on wheel chairs to go on with their daily life, because it’s next to impossible to hold an umbrella while keeping  your hands free to propel your wheelchair.

What happens if you’re caught in the rain, in your wheel chair, and there’s no one to help you? As I asked before, how would you hold an umbrella while keeping your hands free to propel your wheelchair?

The good news is that you can prevent this situation from ever happening to you.

Here’s how…

RehaDesign Brella Buddy Wheelchair Umbrella Holder Plus Square-A-Sol Umbrella

Convenient hands free wheelchair umbrella holder. It is light, functional, water and tear resistant, allows you to have your hands free and not to have anything mounted onto your wheelchair just in case it rains. Umbrella holder can be used with most straight handle umbrellas. But is most convenient with square-a-sol umbrella specially designed with long stem for your convenience.

RehaDesign Wheelchair Accessories are designed in Europe but shipped worldwide by registered international post.  The cost of shipping is included in the purchase price.  The price you see for the product is the final price you will pay.

  • Hands  Free Wheelchair Umbrella Holder

Pros:

  • The Square-A-Sol fits inside of Brella Buddy does not require attaching anything to your wheelchair.
  • No heavy accessories to carry around with you when it is not raining.
  • The umbrella canopy is square, similar in shape to the wheelchair. This gives the wheelchair user ideal coverage and allows you to pass more easily through crowds and doorways.

Cons:

  • I really can’t think of any. I think this is a solid product  that solves the problem of holding an umbrella and having your hands free to propel your wheelchair.

Conclusion

Suffering from back pain, especially if it’s a recent injury, can do a nasty number on your life style. In a word, it  can make it suck big

time. Fortunately it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. There are people out there thinking of intriguing and helpful solutions.

Introduction

How to prevent shoulder pain with  a knee crutch is something that I have been thinking about when one of my readers, who needed a walking aid, wanted to know if he would  be best served by a cane or a  pair of crutches.

You see I have written a lot on the subject of weight —bearing stress on joints and lower extremities. A big concern of mine is also the pain and damage caused by people overworking muscles.

When to Use Crutches

Any way, one should always get the advice of a physical therapist. Generally speaking, however, if you can walk without assistance but you feel you would benefit from additional support as protection against falls, then you should use a cane.

You would use crutches if  your injury meant that the  involved lower extremity should  bear no weight–for example, in the case of a fracture. There’s a big problem, though, with using your hands and arms for support—-Pain

Overuse of The Forearm Muscles Can Lead to Tendonitis

The arms become another major weight-bearing area, and they aren’t designed for it. When overloaded, the supporting muscles may become fatigued, and this will be felt especially where the limb attaches to the torso through the shoulders, creating discomfort and pain.

Crutches and Pain

Consider this story of a man using crutches—perhaps this describes your situation.

Three weeks ago, I fractured my ankle and have been on crutches ever since. My ankle is now fine, but the rest of me feels stiff and awkward; my neck and shoulders ache. But it is my wrist and elbow that hurt most. I can’t even pick up a pen without discomfort…I am 23 years old. Jason Spears, Ashford, Kent [1]

Traditional Crutches Can Ruin You

Having to get around on crutches is like suddenly deciding to go to the gym every morning to exercise only your arms with no rest days in between workouts. Overworking any muscle can cause it atrophy and actually become weaker. Reduce how much running around you do every day, especially at first. Taking frequent breaks will help your sore arms recover between hobbling from one place to another. You can also reduce the pain from exertion in your arms by shortening your crutch stride. Smaller steps put less pressure on your muscles while reducing the chances of a falling accident. [2]

Pain in Your Palm

Here is a story from someone who, on a pain forum, told his experience using traditional crutches.

“Having all your weight put onto your hands hurts, a lot! I would dread waking up and grabbing my crutches. My hands would get super sore, to the point I would not want to use my crutches. It was shooting pain through my palm.”

So, here’s your situation. You’ve just sustained an injury that requires that you use crutches, but you are miserable  as a result of shoulder pain caused by using your hands and arms for support.

What if You Could Use  Your Legs for Support Instead of Your Hands and Arms?

How to Gain Your Bathroom Privacy With Mobility Aids

How to Gain Your Bathroom Privacy With Mobility Aids

How to gain your bathroom privacy with mobile aids may be a difficult thing to talk about. However, it will be a lot less humiliating  than having someone wipe your bottom.

I mean think about it. What could be more  an example of dependency than having to ask for help to clean yourself after going to the toilet. Yet this may be the case if your back injury is so bad that it requires  someone to perform hygiene  tasks for you.

I’ll Manage to Will Myself to The Bathroom

Okay, you have a lot of will power and maybe you might find a way of making your way to the toilet and sitting down. Consider this story of a woman who had problem with her balance but didn’t ask for help.” In the bathroom, she was able to sit down and get up from the toilet, although she needed to hold onto the sink for balance. Another time, her hand slipped off the sink, which caused her to lose her balance and fall. After she fell, she was unable to get up from the bathroom floor.”[1]

The last thing that you need, especially when suffering from back pain, is to lie a long time on the bathroom floor.

Injuries Getting on and off The Toilet

According to the New York Times, “More than a third of the injuries happen while bathing or showering. More than 14 percent occur while using the toilet.” [2]

Taking Back Your Dignity

Enabling yourself to use the toilet involves more than just ‘doing the task”. It reinforces  your belief  that you are in control of providing the best quality of life for you. I mean you don’t actually say”I have a great quality of life because I’m able to go to the bathroom by myself—that would be weird.

That said, yeah you would say your quality of life sucks if you didn’t have the independence to do go the bathroom by yourself.

Talk About a Kick in Your Self Dignity

Well, here’s the good news. I have a list of products that will help maintain your privacy in the bathroom.  No more humiliating  trip to the bathroom.

Here We Go

  1. Grab Bars.  These are available in a wide variety of lengths and styles. When installing grab bars, be sure they are the appropriate length and diameter for your needs and are placed where they will offer the most support. Installing grab bars around the toilet  is a good way to make sure you don’t fall. You can also place them by the shower or tub just to add extra  security.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, every year about 235,000 people over age 15 visit emergency rooms because of injuries suffered in the bathroom, and almost 14 percent are hospitalized.

They go on to say:

Injuries might be reduced through environmental modifications, such as putting non-slip strips in the tub or shower and adding grab bars inside and outside the tub or shower to reduce falls, and installing grab bars next to the toilet for added support if needed [2]

A good option are the Chrome plated Knurled grab bars.

They are easy to grip even in wet bathing areas

You can use the bars in the kitchen along stairways, or in the laundry room for additional fall prevention.Security Poles. I covered security poles in an earlier post about standing aids. Here is the big difference between grab bars and security or supporting poles. Unlike the grab-bar-style wall-mounted support, a support pole can be installed anywhere there is a floor and ceiling, including the middle of the room, to provide support exactly where you need it.

2) Security Pole. By holding onto the pole at a comfortable level, you can use your arm strength for balance and support as you seat yourself on the toilet or get into or out of the tub.

Man using security pole to lift himself up from toilet seat
How to lift yourself up from toilet using security pole

3)  Toilet Seat Frame.  You might also want to consider toilet safety frames. These are arm rests on either side of the toilet  that can act as a guide for sitting and as a push-off point. For added stability, look for a model that is secured to the toilet with bolts.  This is a perfect solution for anyone hating to ask for help sitting on the toilet. These arm rests will give you the independence you need since the arms can be adjusted to be right next to the toilet.

I recommend the Padded Raised Toilet Seat / Safety Frame / Commode (74654) – Eagle Health Supplies

A big selling point is that is has multi functions  which means it can save you a lot of money and space from needing multiple pieces of equipment.Specifically, it has:

•COMMODE: With the Commode Pail installed, it functions as a bedside commode.

•RAISED TOILET SEAT/SAFETY FRAME: With the Splash Guard installed, it becomes a raised toilet seat with a built-in safety frame.

•PADDED SHOWER CHAIR: With the the Splash Guard removed, it becomes a height-adjustable shower chair with comfortable padded seat.

Conclusion

Going to the bathroom in your own house should not be something your fear or feel humiliated  about. It’s time to regain your privacy and dignity.  on these products   and you will once again be able to go to your bathroom without assistance and be safe.

How to Gain Independence With Hand Controls

How to Gain Driver Independence With Hand Controls

Product: Freedom Staff 2.0 Handicap Driving Hand Controls Upgraded Version

Price: $ 269.00

Size: Handle measures: 13 inches wide

Weight capacity: Less than 3 LBs

Cheapest Place to Buy:

Warranty: Check with Company

Rating: 8 out of 10

Introduction

Is The Freedom Staff Hand Controls for disabled drivers right for you?

Imagine being disabled and not being able to use your legs to control the brake and gas pedals of a car. But what if  you want to drive a car other than one that has not been custom modified? Have you wondered how to gain driver independence with hand controls?

Drive With Independence

Perhaps you have been eyeing The Freedom Staff Hand Controls For Disabled drivers and thinking about buying it, right?

Picture of a Man Using Hand Controls to Drive Car
What Hand Controls For Driving look Like

Restoring Dignity

Consider this situation. You have MS from the waist down. Your vision is fine and  your mind still sharp, arms, ect. You just need hand controls to use instead of your legs. In the past you might have had no choice but to try your city’s department  of transportation, but you would’ve gotten the runaround because they didn’t work with individuals. They probably would’ve told you to take the bus. You might have tried other organizations that work with the disabled and encountered  a lot of red tape. The Freedom Staff makes access to portable hand controls easy, and I think that’s a good thing.

Maybe you really miss driving and you like being independent which driving gives you.

Photo of a Woman Driving a Car
The Freedom of Driving

I mean you could take the bus, but the damn bus stops can be too hot or too cold in the winter.Taxi’s cost too much. So saving big bucks by doing your own driving seems like a great option.

Photo of Woman Waiting at Bus Stop
Woman Waiting at Bus Stop

But before you buy The Freedom Staff Controls For Disabled drivers,  take a minute and read my review. As you’ll find out, this driver assisted tool isn’t for everyone…

First off, let me cover the good points of this device:

  • It’s a Freedom Staff product. This company is all about developing products that make it possible for for anyone with physical  challenges to drive themselves and take back their independence. So, you know they have very good intensions.
  • The Freedom Staff can, according to it’s makers, literally travel with you, from vehicle to vehicle. It can be quickly installed in any automobile with an automatic transmission, no tools necessary. It can even be packed and stowed when not needed.
  • The design allows the user to easily handle the steering wheel with one hand while operating the hand control device with the other hand.
  • Freedom Staff handles are easy to install using the included strap that slides over the steering column to stabilize the controls in position. This system of portable hand control will give you the best chance of driving  your own car without adapting completed  driving techniques.
Sounds good so far, right? But there are a couple downsides to this portable hand controls system. Namely:
  • The part that works with the steering column is not attached to the column. This means that you’ll have to handle the steering wheel with one hand while operating the hand control device with the other hand.
  • There’s no control for just the accelerator. There are two poles that go to the accelerator and brake. It’s made, according to the manufacture, for you to use the control and accelerate by gently pulling the lever and to brake by gently pushing the lever toward the floor.

Product Features:

  • Portable with small carry bag included
  • Aircraft grade aluminum, stainless steel hardware.
  • Brake adjusts: 22-30 inches
  • Accelerator adjusts: 19-1/2-26-3/4 inches

Pros:

  • Use with any vehicle with an automatic transmission
  • Easy push and pull operation
  • Simple and quick installation—No tools required
  •   Adjust length to suit your needs
  • Does not attach to steering wheel. Most people find this very convenient

Cons:

  • Does not  attach to steering wheel. Some people found this a concern.

A Better Understanding of  The Hand Controls

One last note about the hand controls. Often people ask when do they really need them. Below is a typical scenario.

QShould I use Hand Controls? This is a scenario where one has been driving for years using his or her right leg, but sometimes misses the brake pedals.  They drive leaving lots of space so that if they do miss the brake pedal they have time to find it before needing to  stop. The question then becomes whether or not they should use hand controls.

A: Find a local driving evaluator and take a test drive with them. They typically have a vehicle set up with different types of controls for you to try.

They will help you figure out what works best for your needs and get you properly licensed to drive with hand controls if your state requires it. If you have no trouble with reaching the brake pedals, you might only need the hand controls.

Conclusion

I understand the importance of disabled people doing everything to live independent lives. In fact, my recent posts have addressed the issue of mobility aids around the house.  I also wrote about standing aids that will prevent one from falling. That said, I have always told my readers that the information on this site is not a substitute  for doctor’s advice. As such, one should always seek medical advice before engaging in any change of routine. Also, as stated earlier, it would be wise to find a driving evaluator to help you answer what are the best car mobility aids for you.

Having said that, this is an awesome opportunity for you to gain the independence to drive your own car.Now there’s only one thing to ask yourself. How long are you going to put up with not being able to drive yourself when and where you please. Get  your driver independence  here.

Learn to be more mobile so that you can become independent.

Introduction

Taking a shower can be a difficult — and potentially dangerous — experience for someone with chronic back pain.

A Woman in a Towel Slips in The Bathroom
Slipping in The Bathroom

Consider this account of a back pain sufferer named Val.

Val’s morning routine is determined by a balance between her need to have someone in the house while she has a shower or bath, and the routines of her family… for Val the unpredictable nature of her pain means that, although she is able to bathe alone, she only does so when one of her family is in the house, getting up at 5.30 in the morning in order to do so. (1)

Control Over Time and Activities

Perhaps you are in a situation similar to Val. Picture  for a moment what it would be like if you weren’t  compelled to wake up early in the morning, interfering with your need to get enough sleep, just so you can take a shower. Imagine how you’d feel if taking a shower when you wanted to wasn’t an issue anymore. You could wake up as late as you wanted to and catch up on your sleep.  Imagine  removing the need for the presence of a family member to be in the house while you are taking a shower and thus giving  you more control over your  time and activities. Just picture how joyous life would be if you took the trauma  out of showering. The good news is that dreaming about independent living isn’t just a fantasy – it CAN happen.

And all you have to do to gain more independence in your own house is to make sure that you can safely  engage in such activities  as taking a shower without the need for some one to be in the house.

Here’s how…

You Can Buy a Bath Seat

A place to rest inside the shower can provide relief for someone suffering from chronic widespread pain.

Shower Chair, Bath Chair, Padded with Armrests by Platinum Health is the perfect bathroom aid for people with diminished and/or painful mobility issues.

In addition, the swivel seat eliminates the need to protrude into the bathroom like many older, non-swivel models. The soft padding prevents tearing of the skin and provides a warmer feel to the skin than standard models. Surfaces are easy to clean and disinfect. The quick, tool-less height adjustment function allows for perfect integration into virtually any bathtub on the market. The frame is made of rustproof aluminum for years of reliable use.

The comfortable bath/shower bench is the latest addition to Platinum Health’s line of premium bathroom safety products. Designed for users who value quality, safety, comfort and convenience over price, the Comfortable is the perfect choice for users and caregivers who need a high-end bath and shower chair.

Getting Away From Cold Plastic Seat Surfaces

When you have back pain the last thing you want to do is add more stress to your spine by sitting on a hard surface.

Unlike the former rigid and cold plastic seat surfaces, the Comfortable is equipped with a seat surface, backrest and armrests of the highest quality, padded and easy to clean.

How About us Big Guys?

The adjustable seat height allows the bench to safely accommodate any user.  That means even big guys weighing up to 300 pounds can use this chair.

But because he has  the shower chair, he feels comfortable going to the shower, even when he is alone at home.

It is easily assembled. Very robust and comfortable, Cheerful color, light enough to lift and get out of the shower, he was so surprised to see how nice it was. It can also be used by people who are older and find it very difficult to go to the shower alone. The chair is fantastic, not hard and does not hurt you. It’s well built and very easy to assemble. This shower chair is highly recommended for people who want to be independent by going to the shower.

My friend feels much safer now because he does not have to worry about falling while trying to get in the tub. Stop the trauma of taking a shower. Get the shower seat here

How to Prevent Falls by Using Security Pole

How to Prevent Falls by Using Security Pole

Product: Stander Safety Bar and the Curve Hold Bar

Price: $ 118.70

Warranty: Life time warranty

Rating: 9 out of 10

Introduction

Most people take freedom of movement for granted. The question of how to prevent falls by using a security pole and grab bar is something they never have to think  about. They rise in the morning, move around their home, leave for school, work, just carry on with their plans. When you are disabled or have an injury, the act of getting from one place to another can become troublesome.

One of the biggest concerns , for an elderly pain sufferer, when it comes to mobility around the house is falling.

A Man Haven Fallen Down The Stairs
Falling Down The Stairs

Falls often lead to a fear of falling, which can decrease mobility and independence particularly if an older person loses confidence in the ability to perform activities. Up to 50% of those who have fallen admit to avoiding activities because of fear of further falls or injury.[1]

Consider the following account:

Fear of Falling

Mrs. W had experienced three falls over the past month, all under similar circumstances. Each time, she awakened in the middle of the night with an urge to urinate. After getting out of bed, she hurried to the bathroom without her walker (to guard against incontinence). One time, she slipped on a small area rug by her bed and fell.

Both her bedroom and narrow hallway are poorly illuminated. She felt a little dizzy after getting out of bed and used furnishings and walls to support her balance when walking. In the bathroom, she was able to sit down and get up from the toilet, although she needed to hold onto the sink for balance. Another time, her hand slipped off the sink, which caused her to lose her balance and fall. After she fell, she was unable to get up from the bathroom floor. [2]

Relief For The Entire Family

Falls are distressing for family members, as in the case of Mrs. W. At issue is whether the patient can live at home alone and remain safe. This  is where a security pole and grab bar can be a big help. Security poles enable elderly and disabled individuals to rise up or sit down with strong and stable assistance.

They are excellent fall prevention tools. And can be installed strategically in the home to add security and stability to your or a loved one’s environment.

One of The Best is The Stander Security Pole and Grab Bar

How to Ensure Medicine Safety With a Talking Radio Clock

How to Ensure Medicine Safety With a Talking Radio Clock

Product: Reminder Rosie Talking Alarm Clock

Price: $ 99.95

Cheapest Place to Buy: Amazon

Warranty: Check with vendor

Rating: 9 out of 10

Introduction

Are you getting concerned that your chronic pain suffering elderly parent is risking his or her health even more by forgetting to take their  medicine? Medicine safety is indeed a big deal when it comes to caring for elderly parents. Do you get worried every time your parent confuses thinking about taking medication with actually  taking it. The result  is an increase in pain.  On the other end of the  problem, confusion over what was already taken may result in overdoses.

Why It’s Important to Take Your Medicine

If you don’t take your medication as prescribed, you will experience a worsening of pain and possibly progression of the disease, says Lars Osterberg, MD, a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine, in California, and an expert in patient medication compliance. If you’re taking medicine for chronic pain, for example, skipping medication can make pain harder to treat, he says. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics, for example, are used as much for prevention as treatment. “When pain flares, it’s hard to knock it down again,” he says. “The same goes for inflammation. If you get behind the eight ball and inflammation builds up, it can be hard to suppress that inflammation and pain.” [1]

The Problem of Not Complying

Medication non-adherence and noncompliance is a $300 billion problem: 49% of Americans forget to or altogether stop taking their prescribed medications at any given time, and often it’s the most ill who forget to take their medications most, which compounds their problems further. [2]

Chronic Pain Can Hamper Memory

Researchers have confirmed that chronic pain doesn’t just cause physical discomfort; it can impair your memory and your concentration. [3]

The other day, for instance, my mother walked into the kitchen and had no ides why she  was there and what she was looking for. She just looked at me, flustered for a moment, as to why she had cooked sausages. “Oh well, let’s have some pasta,” she said.

A few minutes after  we had already eaten, she remembered that she had gone to the kitchen to get red and and green peppers to prepare with the sausages

Missing a dose of a medication for a non-life-threatening condition doesn’t mean there are going to be horrendous complications. However, not taking your health seriously and not being medication adherent on a regular basis can have dire consequences for you and your loved one.

It’s one thing to point out a problem. It is another to provide solutions.

Reminder Rosie Talking Alarm Clock

How to ensure medicine safety with  a talking radio clock is something that Reminder Rosie does well. Reminder Rosie is designed to solve the real daily challenges of memory loss. Inspired by the creator’s father who has suffered from dementia, Rosie is a personalized, voice-controlled reminder system that older adults love! Tech That Mom and Dad Will Actually Use

Introducing the new brand-name Rosie alarm clock with personalized date reminders and more! Rosie Reminder is a low tech memory aid device that older people actually use. It’s a simple, hands-free, low-cost solution to remind you of your medications, appointments, and daily tasks while serving as a voice-activated digital alarm clock. Because the Rosie reminder can be used almost entirely by voice, it is the perfect living aid device for the visually impaired.

Get Rid of The Nagging Factor

Who wants to feel like a nag? Now this is something you don’t have to worry about. Personalized voice reminders in the comforting voice of a loved one or caregiver provide seniors with the confidence and independence they deserve while reducing caregiver stress and increasing engagement with caregivers. Using state-of-the-art technology, Reminder’s Rosie talking clock is easy to use right out of the box for seniors, seniors, spouses or caregivers.

How  Reminder Rosie Works

Simply plug Rosie’s Reminder, say “Hello Reminder Rosie” to wake her up and say “Set Time”, “Set Date” or “Help”. Once the time and date are set, wake up Rosie and say “Record Reminder”. With Reminder Rosie, you can save and set up to 25 personalized reminders of life per day, week, date or year. Once your reminders are set, you can even say “Today’s Reminders” to Rosie and she will tell you exactly what’s in store for the day.

Rosie is  a Godsend! I bought Rosie for my mother who tends to forget her medication. She says it’s like I’m here to remind her because it’s playing in my voice. This is an excellent purchase and I would recommend it to everyone!

Pros:

Get Rid of The Nagging Factor

Cons:

Can at times speak without prompting, but that’s no big deal. It’s something that can easily be dealt with.

Conclusion

Rosie became a member of our family.  Not only does this give mom daily advice, but thanks to its innovative design, it’s my voice she hears … Get the same relief that I have. So check it out right now at  – and don’t delay, because you’re going to love getting a peace of mind that your pain suffering  mom or dad won’t miss their  daily medicine.

How to Stop Your Pain From Determining Your World–Part 1

How to Stop Your Pain From Determining Your World—Part 1

I have written a lot of posts that focused on managing chronic back pain. I have covered a wide range of treatments and tips from essential oils to electronic games as distraction. One of the things that moved me and truly pulled at my heart was the belief by some pain sufferers that they are doomed to a life of despair.

What Grief Looks Like
Girl in Grief

I now know that the best way I can help those remarkable people renew hope is to to provide the answer to the question of how to stop your pain from determining your world.

What Burn Out Looks Like
Burn Out

Perhaps the reason you are reading this post is that you also need the answer for yourself or a loved one. Welcome to the first of 3 posts that I hope will strengthen  your resolve and think anew about this notion that everything is already determined about your future.

Before we get started, I would like to ask you something. Are you familiar with linguistic determinism? If not, let me start by defining it for you: Linguistic Determinism is the theory that language not only influences but also determines the way we perceive the world.

The reason I wanted to define it is because of the serious implication that such a mindset may have on  pain sufferers’ belief that their lives will never get better.

Even if a chronic pain sufferer has never heard of linguistic determinism, he or she may be buying it’s central message:

The world is the way it is because of language. The only reality is the reality that our language conceives.

Many chronic pain sufferers have used words such as “Burden” or “unreliable” to describe how they are seen by others and how they see themselves. Perhaps this has happened to you  or a loved one. To help you  better understand why this  position  may not fully describe such a situation, let’s think about the universe. Seriously, just follow me for a moment and you’ll see the connection.

So, let’s consider the universe.

The Beauty of Space
Space

As Michael Cole points out  in “Culture and language”, “It is not necessarily related to what is ‘out there’. Our exploration of the universe would be restricted to the features coded by our language.” [1]

In other words, any feelings  that result from the way we use our language may not fully   reflect what is going on in the universe.  We may think that we are completely describing what we see, but that may not be the case. It may be that the restrictions of our language does not make it possible to have an understanding of everything that is happening in the universe.

A Planet in Space
Planet

Here is the connection

It may be that the feelings of being a burden are there only because of the words you use and believe. The reality  may be that far from being a burden, you are actually an inspiration to those that watch you cope with daily pain.

My mission in this series of posts is to show that linguistic determinism is flawed and thus any assumption  which entails linguistic determinism is also flawed.

Remember that example I gave of the universe? If you make assumptions based on the restricted ways you use language, you may be missing out on a bunch of things that are part of the universe.  In the same respect it’s possible that you only  see yourself, because of the way you use language, as a burden to others and are failing to see other qualities that are in fact part of you.

What is The Case For Linguistic Determinism?

Before one can fairly  show why linguistic determinism is flawed,  one needs to examine why some people find it a credible way to look at the world. The focus on this post, thus, is to acknowledge that language influences the way we perceive the world. In my second post I will show precisely how language influences the way we look at the world. In the final post I will show  why one can not make the the jump from saying language influences the way we perceive the world to saying language determines the way we look at the world.

The Way Language Influences How We Perceive The World

C. L. Stevenson, a famous American philosopher whose work entails some sort of linguistic determinism, has made us realize two ways in which language influences us.

  1. Language has the power to effect us psychologically. Some people call this an emotive or dynamic character of language. An example of an emotive use of language would be calling a black man ‘nigger’. The word ‘nigger’ has negative connotations and would produce a reaction to the person using it.
  2. Another use of Language is Descriptive Use. Language gets its meaning by being in accordance with certain linguistic rules. Although the second us of language is not supposed to have an emotive effect, it in essence does once one makes a mental connection to the descriptive word. For example, the emotive meaning of ‘dog’ in “That woman is a dog” is dependent not on the precise definition of “dog”, but upon what, when applied metaphorically to women, it suggests.

The Reality Our language Conceives

So what does it mean to the pain sufferer if he or she accepts the notion that language  influences the way he or she looks at the world. It could be that words effect the way they will decide to act. To illustrate,  let’s imagine a pain sufferer keeps hearing the word “difficult” when others refer to his or her abrupt  behavior. If she  accepts the notion that the only reality is the reality that her language conceives, then the pain sufferer  may act in a way that reinforces the perception to others that he or she is a difficult person to be with.

He or she may come to believe that  life as they know it is nothing more than a daily battle to control his or her “difficult” behavior. They may also come to believe, as stated int the beginning of this post, that they are a burden or are unreliable.

Conclusion

Are you a pain sufferer who has reached  this stage? Do you live a life of despair  because you think that you are a big drag on loved ones? If not you, then perhaps it describes some one you are taking care off. Hang on. This post focused on acknowledging  the feelings of hopelessness that a pain sufferer may have. My second post will examine how language influences, according to those who support linguist  determinism, the way we look at the world.

My hope is that even after acknowledging and then showing how language  influences the way a pain sufferer looks at the world, it does not determine how he or she will cope in the future.

Let me reiterate this last point, simply because it’s so important:

The fact that you may feel defeated now, because of your pain, is not determinant of how you’ll feel in the future.

What’s more, it’s okay to acknowledge  that you are angry, ashamed,  and frustrated. I hope, though, that by the end of this series you will have found the inspiration and belief that you can move on and have a worthwhile life.

Here’s what I suggest you do next:

Review what you just learned and then examine honestly all the times  you felt “bad” because  you think that some how you have disappointed  loved ones.

So go ahead and get started right now, because the sooner you acknowledge  how you feel, the sooner you’ll get the benefits from this series. I like to hear from the readers so please leave me a comment below to let me know if this post helped you or if you have any questions.

How to Conquer Anxiety With Weighted Blankets

Introduction

How to conquer anxiety with weighted blankets may be some thing  you might have heard discussed in the news and wondered how it worked.

Tips on weighted blanket therapy
Weighted blanket therapy

First, let me ask you a question. Are you familiar with Deep Pressure Touch Stimulation? If not, let me start by defining it for you: DPTS mimics the same calming effects that one experiences while receiving a hug.It gently distributes deep pressure across the entire body to calm the body and help it relax.

Think of how swaddling helps babies to sleep more calmly at night.

Now studies are showing that similar principles work with adults struggling to get a good night’s sleep. Clinical tests into Deep Pressure Touch (DPT) stimulation have revealed that the practice of applying weight to our body helps relax the nervous system, providing comfort and relief. Occupational therapists have been utilizing deep pressure touch technique for over three decades, thanks to Dr. Temple Grandin, who pioneered the use of this technique. [1]

The science behind deep pressure touch is finding its way from the clinical setting to the mainstream marketplace in such products as the Weighted Blankets. Weighted blankets look just like regular blankets, except that they aren’t. They are filled with plastic or glass beads to create pressure and touch simulation on the user’s body.

Now that you know what DTPS means, let me share with you how a group of people suffering from anxiety, caused by stress or pain, are using weighted blankets to get rid of their  anxiety  – and how you can too. Read on for the eye-opening details…

How Weighted Blankets Comfort

Think back of when you were a kid. Maybe you crawled in under one of those amazing  quilts that your grandmother  made. Well, remember how the heaviness of it was comforting? Weighted blankets work the same way.

From Kids to Adults

You may be a bit skeptical that what works for kids will work for adults. Here is an account of a mother  who found that a weighted blanket  decreased her anxiety and gave her a sense of peace. she writes:

“It was summer. My life was in an unexpected place after a tragedy claimed the life of my 31/2 year old son; I was holding it together, but the grief in my heart festered just below the surface.

I was in my living room, packing up a very large adult-size kingsize weighted blanket ordered by an occupational therapist. On a whim, before I put the blanket in its box, I sat on my couch and rested the enter folded blanket on my chest.

The feeling that washed over me is difficult to put into words. Something like peace. A sense of centeredness. The weight of my grief was lifted, even if temporarily. It was sweet relief…I was surprised by the profound effect of such a simple thing.” [2]

The Scientific  Results

Tina Champagne is an occupational therapist and one of the primary researchers into the safety and effectiveness of weighted blankets. In recent safety  studies, Champagne recorded adult participants’ response to the weighted blanket:

Study 1:

63% reported less anxiety symptoms after using 30 lb. weighted blanket.

Study 2:

51% reported a reduction in anxiety after using 30lb. weighted blanket. 77% reported a preference  for the weighted blanket when using a self-determined amount of weight.

Study3:

When asked when they felt the most relaxed, 91% selected “When using the weighted blanket.” [3]

Taking Back Control

The gist of the study is that when  a person is having a difficult time managing or coping with the stresses they are experiencing (emotional, sensory, etc,) the weight of a weighted blanket can help them regain a sense of being in control. The idea: The pressure (which can range from four to 24 pounds) may trigger your brain to release calming neurotransmitters–just like when you get hugged. Yes, it doesn’t have to be 30 pounds. Just like mattress and pillow firmness, a certain type of blanket may help you sleep better. For most people, 15 to 20 pounds works well.

Which Weighted Blanket Should You Choose? Not to worry, I have the answer for you. Normally, I would suggest that you take a look at Amazon. However, I wasn’t impressed with the pewter and charcoal types they had for  adults. A deal breaker for me was that  they  were made from material that would just make you sweat without allowing you to get much sleep.

Here are two great weighted blankets that I recommend. I’m not getting one cent from this recommendation, but  I like the fact that they are machine washable,  made from cotton, and  help with the  problem of anxiety and insomnia. The Pewter Weighted Blanket affectively addresses the issue of anxiety, and  the Charcoal Weighted Blanket is great for helping you get rid of your insomnia.

THE TWO BEST WEIGHTED BLANKETS FOR ADULTS

Pewter Weighted Blanket

Material: Quilting Fabric (adds little warmth)

100% Cotton

Dimensions: 40” x 74”

Machine Washable

Wondering what size to choose? The ideal coverage weight is 10% of your body weight. When between sizes, we recommend going down. Many find the 15 lb. cover to be the right weight.

How is a blanket made? Each Weighting Comforts blanket is handmade. We use a high quality 100% cotton fabric and 100% polyester yarn for strength and durability. Weighted beads inside each 5 “pocket are made of an FDA approved non-irritating PVC compound.

How can Pewter Weighted Blanket help? Pewter Weighted Blanket is designed to improve your sleep and reduce your anxiety for comfort throughout the year. Many people experience a deeper and more restful sleep the first night. Others find the weight of the restrictive blanket early, but after several nights grow to like the effect of weight. Clients experiencing extreme anxiety were immediately comforted by using this blanket.

How does Pewter Weighted Blanket work? It works like a deep tissue massage, similar to the effect of a dentist’s lead blanket, releasing serotonin throughout your body to help you calm down and relax.

Charcoal Weighted Blanket

Details

Material: Flannel (adds some warmth)

100% Cotton

Dimensions: 42” x 74”

Charcoal Weighted blankets are heavier than the types of blankets that people usually buy. They usually weigh between 4 and 30 pounds, making them heavier than the average duvet or down comforter. For many people with disorders such as anxiety, insomnia or autism, charcoal blankets can be a safe alternative to medication or other types of treatment. These can also be used to supplement existing therapies.

Benefits

Charcoal Weighted blankets can help reduce anxiety in  adults. They are generally safe to use. They help many people to reach a state of relaxation, allowing them to sleep more deeply. Charcoal Weighted blankets help your body rest during sleep by pushing it down. This process, known as “grounding” or “grounding,” can have a profoundly soothing effect. The blankets also simulate Deep Touch (TPD), a type of therapy that uses firm, practical pressure to reduce chronic stress and high levels of anxiety.

Studies show that grounding can help reduce nocturnal levels of cortisol, a stress hormone. Cortisol is produced when your brain thinks you are being attacked, causing the fight or flight response. Stress can increase cortisol levels. This can have a negative impact on the immune system. It can also increase blood sugar levels and harm the digestive tract. High levels of cortisol, especially those that do not fall back to normal levels, can cause multiple complications.

If you have trouble sleeping, Charcoal Weighted blanket is the right thing for you. The added weight really helps with any anxiety or insomnia. When I was little, I stacked blankets on my bed to add weight, but it was still too hot. Now that I only have one blanket, it’s not too hot, but I still have the extra weight I need to sleep.

I used to throw and spin if I just had sheets and a quilt covering me. Now, I sleep like a rock during the night, I wake up cooler and ready to start the day. It is also good to know that this blanket eliminates the need to take any medication to help you sleep. No melatonin or anything. If you are like me, or if you know someone like me, you should definitely get this Charcoal Weighted blanket. You will notice the difference in one night.

Weighted Blankets For Kids

For the most part, the weighted blankets that I have mentioned are meant for adults. They should not be used for children.  What if you needed a weighted blanket that could  also address anxiety  and restless sleep of your child? In other words, what if you needed a weighted blanket that children and adults could use?

The Calmforter Premium Weighted Blanker from Amazon is a great option. Perfect for adults who want a full size blanket. Ideal for children; simply leave any un-needed weight bunched up at the end of the bed or on the floor. Protect your investment with a blanket that fast growing children will never outgrow.
