Another time, her hand slipped off the sink, which caused her to lose her balance and fall. After she fell, she was unable to get up from the bathroom floor. [2]

I really didn’t find any, other than you need a flat ceiling for it to work. However, that’s not a big issue for most people.

How to Stop Pain From Determining Your World—Part 2

Welcome back to the second part of the series that focuses on how to stop pain from determining your world. The whole series is a reply to the linguistic  determinist who believe that language not only influences, but determines the way we perceive the world.

The first post focused on acknowledging  the feelings of hopelessness that a pain sufferer may have as a result of accepting that his  or her world is the way it is because of language. Thus, the only reality is the reality that their language conceives. So, for example, he or she  may perceive themselves to be a  “problem”  because that’s how they keep describing themselves.

My second post will examine how language influences, according to those who support linguist  determinism, the way we look at the world.

As I said in post 1 of the series , my hope is that even after acknowledging and then showing how language  influences the way a pain sufferer looks at the world, it does not determine how he or she will cope in the future.

Let’s Jump In.

In the last post I spoke about C. L. Stevenson, a famous American philosopher whose work, entails some sort of linguistic determinism. The notion, as I said, that the world is the way because  of language. After dealing with the belief that language influences the way we look at the world, it’s time to show precisely how, in the eyes of linguistic determinist,  language influences your actions. Benjamine  Lee Whorf, was an American linguist and fire prevention engineer who seems to back up Stevenson’s theory. In his article “The language”,  he argues rather successfully how language influences how you see the world. This has a tremendous implication  for someone like a chronic pain sufferer. Why? Well, how he or she sees the world can have direct impact on how he or she sees themselves  in the world.

To illustrate, let’s say a pain sufferer’s vision of the world around her or him is confined to the contributions that family  members make to the financial success of the family. If that’s their  entire scope of how they fit in the world, then they could easily  come to accept the description  of themselves as moochers. Consider this excerpt from a report about pain sufferers unable to work—“Many people felt guilty about not working and suspected that they were labelled a ‘shirker’ or a fraud particularly if they claimed unemployment benefits” [1]

Case of The empty Gasoline Drum

Benjamine Whorf was a fire inspector and drew heavily on his work with fire victims for illustrative material. He argues that language  correlates with perception and that it may actually determine the way people perceive  reality. He notes, for example, that words often affect the way people decide to act.  Employees at one factory, he discovered, would heat “full” gasoline drums with care, but didn’t take “empty” ones seriously, despite the fact that the gasoline fumes in empty drums are more volatile. The careless actions are rushed by the lack of danger associated with the word “empty”.

In the case of a chronic pain sufferer the lesson to be considered is as follows: words such as exhausting, excruciating, and debilitating may be like the full gasoline drum. They cause others to be more empathic and thus more considerate in how they relate to pain sufferers. However, chronic pain unlike a burn doesn’t leave visible scars. Those invisible scars that may not be given much considerations can be just as volatile as the gasoline fumes in empty drums.

A pain sufferer’s  condition can cause them to erupt in anger or come across as mean. The result often is a further isolation from the very people that he or she needs.

Another Example From Whorf’s Article is Stated as Follows:

A tannery discharged waste water containing animal matter into an outdoor settling basin partly roofed with wood and partly open. This situation is one that ordinarily would be verbalized as “pool of water”. A workman had occasion to light a blowtorch near by, and threw his match into the water. But the decomposing waste matter was evolving gas under the wood cover, so that the set-up was the reverse of “watery”. An instant flare of flames ignited the woodwork, and the fire quickly spread into the adjoining building.[2]


We can state the lesson of mentioned incident this way: the cue to how we behave is often given by the analogies of the language  we use. It was quite reasonable for the workman to think that  his match would be distinguished  by what he thought was a pool of water. The reality was that he, because of the decomposing waste matter, was actually  putting a lit match  to gas. The result was the opposite of what he had attended—a disastrous fire.

Like wise, you see that  a pain sufferer has lost interest in doing anything today and yet was more active yesterday. You want to help. You figure that you’ll give them a “pep talk” because motivation always pushes people to get on with their lives. What you may fail to realize is that your well meaning words to ‘try harder” may actually have the opposite effect of  encouragement and instead deepen the person’s sense of awareness of her or his condition. You maybe clueless to the fact that a person experiencing fluctuating levels of pain often uses “good days”  to squeeze  everything they can as a way to preserve their  energy on a bad day when pain doesn’t allow them to do routine activities. On a good day the body can be controlled in order to accomplish activities, and to store up time against a bad day.


As I said in the beginning  of this series, I reject the linguistic determinist view  that language determines  the way we perceive  the world. I think this notion is particularly harmful to those experiencing chronic widespread pain who may come to believe that they are how they are described. That said, for me to credibly make my argument  as to why pain sufferers, and anyone for that matter, should reject linguist determinism I had to acknowledge the popular aspects of the theory.

With that in mind, the first post in this series addressed the notion that language influences the way we look at the world. The second post, as promised, examined how language  does this.  Having accepted and given a fair hearing the contention that language influences how we perceive  the world, I am now ready to show why it’s too big a leap and unreasonable to say language determines the way we look at the world. This will be the topic of my next post. How to Stop Your Pain From Determining Your World—Part 1

I have written a lot of posts that focused on managing chronic back pain. I have covered a wide range of treatments and tips from essential oils to electronic games as distraction. One of the things that moved me and truly pulled at my heart was the belief by some pain sufferers that they are doomed to a life of despair.

Perhaps the reason you are reading this post is that you also need the answer for yourself or a loved one. Welcome to the first of 3 posts that I hope will strengthen  your resolve and think anew about this notion that everything is already determined about your future.

Before we get started, I would like to ask you something. Are you familiar with linguistic determinism? If not, let me start by defining it for you: Linguistic Determinism is the theory that language not only influences but also determines the way we perceive the world.

The reason I wanted to define it is because of the serious implication that such a mindset may have on  pain sufferers’ belief that their lives will never get better.

Even if a chronic pain sufferer has never heard of linguistic determinism, he or she may be buying it’s central message:

The world is the way it is because of language. The only reality is the reality that our language conceives.

Many chronic pain sufferers have used words such as “Burden” or “unreliable” to describe how they are seen by others and how they see themselves. Perhaps this has happened to you  or a loved one. To help you  better understand why this  position  may not fully describe such a situation, let’s think about the universe. Seriously, just follow me for a moment and you’ll see the connection.

So, let’s consider the universe.

The Beauty of Space

As Michael Cole points out  in “Culture and language”, “It is not necessarily related to what is ‘out there’. Our exploration of the universe would be restricted to the features coded by our language.” [1]

In other words, any feelings  that result from the way we use our language may not fully   reflect what is going on in the universe.  We may think that we are completely describing what we see, but that may not be the case. It may be that the restrictions of our language does not make it possible to have an understanding of everything that is happening in the universe.

It may be that the feelings of being a burden are there only because of the words you use and believe. The reality  may be that far from being a burden, you are actually an inspiration to those that watch you cope with daily pain.

My mission in this series of posts is to show that linguistic determinism is flawed and thus any assumption  which entails linguistic determinism is also flawed.

Remember that example I gave of the universe? If you make assumptions based on the restricted ways you use language, you may be missing out on a bunch of things that are part of the universe.  In the same respect it’s possible that you only  see yourself, because of the way you use language, as a burden to others and are failing to see other qualities that are in fact part of you.

What is The Case For Linguistic Determinism?

Before one can fairly  show why linguistic determinism is flawed,  one needs to examine why some people find it a credible way to look at the world. The focus on this post, thus, is to acknowledge that language influences the way we perceive the world. In my second post I will show precisely how language influences the way we look at the world. In the final post I will show  why one can not make the the jump from saying language influences the way we perceive the world to saying language determines the way we look at the world.

The Way Language Influences How We Perceive The World

C. L. Stevenson, a famous American philosopher whose work entails some sort of linguistic determinism, has made us realize two ways in which language influences us.

  1. Language has the power to effect us psychologically. Some people call this an emotive or dynamic character of language. An example of an emotive use of language would be calling a black man ‘nigger’. The word ‘nigger’ has negative connotations and would produce a reaction to the person using it.
  2. Another use of Language is Descriptive Use. Language gets its meaning by being in accordance with certain linguistic rules. Although the second us of language is not supposed to have an emotive effect, it in essence does once one makes a mental connection to the descriptive word. For example, the emotive meaning of ‘dog’ in “That woman is a dog” is dependent not on the precise definition of “dog”, but upon what, when applied metaphorically to women, it suggests.

The Reality Our language Conceives

So what does it mean to the pain sufferer if he or she accepts the notion that language  influences the way he or she looks at the world. It could be that words effect the way they will decide to act. To illustrate,  let’s imagine a pain sufferer keeps hearing the word “difficult” when others refer to his or her abrupt  behavior. If she  accepts the notion that the only reality is the reality that her language conceives, then the pain sufferer  may act in a way that reinforces the perception to others that he or she is a difficult person to be with.

He or she may come to believe that  life as they know it is nothing more than a daily battle to control his or her “difficult” behavior. They may also come to believe, as stated int the beginning of this post, that they are a burden or are unreliable.


Are you a pain sufferer who has reached  this stage? Do you live a life of despair  because you think that you are a big drag on loved ones? If not you, then perhaps it describes some one you are taking care off. Hang on. This post focused on acknowledging  the feelings of hopelessness that a pain sufferer may have. My second post will examine how language influences, according to those who support linguist  determinism, the way we look at the world.

My hope is that even after acknowledging and then showing how language  influences the way a pain sufferer looks at the world, it does not determine how he or she will cope in the future.

Let me reiterate this last point, simply because it’s so important:

The fact that you may feel defeated now, because of your pain, is not determinant of how you’ll feel in the future.

What’s more, it’s okay to acknowledge  that you are angry, ashamed,  and frustrated. I hope, though, that by the end of this series you will have found the inspiration and belief that you can move on and have a worthwhile life.

Here’s what I suggest you do next:

Review what you just learned and then examine honestly all the times  you felt “bad” because  you think that some how you have disappointed  loved ones.

For years I had floor to floor carpeting for my house, but I replaced it with hardwood flooring because the carpet kept making my elderly mother, 88, sick. As soon as I got rid of the carpet, her breathing problems came to a stop. She didn’t notice any greater pain from walking on the hardwood floor. Every situation is different, of course, but for my mom removing the carpet did her a lot of good. While many people might not necessarily take into account the state of their health when picking out flooring, it’s within reason to include it as a potential factor, especially if you are susceptible to allergens or pathogens of some sort. That said, hardwood flooring can be a lot more expansive than carpeting.

You have to consider the cost of having an under bed, material needed to cushion the flooring, that goes with the float type of installation. You should know the exact square yards of each room. All you have to do is check out the original blue print of the house. If you have a base to work from, the estimator won’t go crazy adding square yards that you don’t need.

3. Make good use of your Space

Hardwood flooring can have a thickness of 3/4 a plank or less. I used the thicker planks for downstairs and the kitchen, the spaces with the most traffic. I used the thinner flooring upstairs, including closets. I saved a couple of hundred dollars.

The planks will remain flat and stable regardless of crazy seasonal changes. This may save you money in the long run. Also, many homeowners simply enjoy the look of hardwood flooring. It can add a real elegance to the home. Also, a nice feature about engineered hardwood is that it can be used  in most rooms.

4. Keep The Molding

It isn’t necessary to get rid of your original molding unless you don’t mind spending $800.00 dollars or more. Most big outfits will try to convince you that the original molding won’t fit back on correctly. Stand your ground. You don’t need to have people rip apart your perfectly good molding just so they can charge you more money.

5. Try to Deal With The Local

Consider using a local flooring store. The contractor will have likely done a lot of work in your neighborhood. He or she will have people who can vouch for his or her work. The local contractor will also be aware of the rules and regulations concerning how to get rid of the carpet that’s now thrash. You’ll save yourself a big fine.


Well, I’m happy with my Red Oak hardwood floor. It’s easy to clean and mom doesn’t have coughing fits anymore from all the dust and bacteria that was trapped in the carpet. I didn’t bust my budget. The Scientific  Results

Tina Champagne is an occupational therapist and one of the primary researchers into the safety and effectiveness of weighted blankets. In recent safety  studies, Champagne recorded adult participants’ response to the weighted blanket:

Study 1:

63% reported less anxiety symptoms after using 30 lb. weighted blanket.

Study 2:

The idea: The pressure (which can range from four to 24 pounds) may trigger your brain to release calming neurotransmitters–just like when you get hugged. Yes, it doesn’t have to be 30 pounds. Just like mattress and pillow firmness, a certain type of blanket may help you sleep better. For most people, 15 to 20 pounds works well.

Which Weighted Blanket Should You Choose? Not to worry, I have the answer for you. Normally, I would suggest that you take a look at Amazon. However, I wasn’t impressed with the pewter and charcoal types they had for  adults. A deal breaker for me was that  they  were made from material that would just make you sweat without allowing you to get much sleep.

Here are two great weighted blankets that I recommend. I’m not getting one cent from this recommendation, but  I like the fact that they are machine washable,  made from cotton, and  help with the  problem of anxiety and insomnia.
